We are all Greeks: #19Jan Day of Solidarity against Fascism and Racism in Greece

407028_10150660358616101_1822485421_nWe are all Greeks – What we are seeing in Greece today, might be what we are seeing in the rest of Europe tomorrow. It is like the start of the 1930’s again, as outlined in the Guardian last October (Fear and loathing in Athens: the rise of Golden Dawn and the far right)

In austerity-ravaged Greece, neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn is on the rise. Their MPs give fascist salutes, while on the streets black-shirted vigilantes beat up immigrants. And some of their most enthusiastic supporters are in the police

In response to this, today is an international day of solidarity with people in Greece: Demonstration 19th January: International Day of Solidarity against Fascism and Racism in Greece. In depth videos found at end of this article.

Things are getting so bad in Greece that the situation finally came to the attention of Irish mainstream media this week: a recent show on RTE`s Pat Kenny, January 14, 2013:

Golden Dawn in Greece and Regional Nationalism in Spain

How are our colleagues around Europe dealing with the economic crisis and the austerity regimes being enforced by governments on the instruction of Europe? While some countries like Greece and Italy have looked to the Far Right, Spain has looked to provincialism, elections in the Basque country, Galicia and Catalunia showed nationalist parties doing well. Pat was joined from London by Maria Margaronis who has written extensively on the Golden Dawn, Right Wing movement in Greece and by Joe Haslam Professor At The I.E. Business School In Madrid from Spain.

And this is why we should take to the streets today..

Demonstration 19th January: International Day of Solidarity against Fascism and Racism in Greece

On 19th January across Ireland and across the world, anti-fascists will be out in solidarity with Greek anti-fascists as part of a “call for international solidarity with participation in Athens demonstration on 19th of January and antifascist action around the world outside Greek embassies” called by a coalition of anti-fascist and anti-racist groups, immigrant groups, trade unions, students’ unions and pupils, intellectuals and artists. The callout enourages the people to “occupy the city [Athens] with music, chants and speeches, to shout that the Nazis are not welcome, that the coalition government’s racist policies of concentration camps, FRONTEX and of the denial of citizenship to the children of immigrants, enrage us as much as the barbaric measures that send hundreds of thousands to unemployment.”

Anti-fascist actions will take place across the world in several major cities including as London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin, Leeds, Bristol, Barcelona, Derry, Cork,  Ossona, Manresa, La Garriga, Bilbao, Lyon, Copenhagen, Vienna, Tampere, Warsaw, Moscow, Chicago, New York, Sydney, Montreal and Ljubljana, amongst others…
